Leisure Facility Cleaning Guidelines
When the time comes to re-open, leisure facilities will be able to find general cleaning guidelines on the UK Government website, but in a nutshell should follow these simple procedures to keep staff and members safe:

Maintain good ventilation in a sports, gym or leisure facility as coronavirus stays longer on indoor surfaces. It’s best to open windows and doors as often as possible.

All areas where people train and work out (including cardio and stationary gym equipment as well as free weights, mats, balls, etc) should be cleaned between use using appropriate disinfectants and cleaning products. If equipment cannot be cleaned after each user it should not be used at all.

Frequently touched surfaces should also be sanitised and cleaned on a regular basis throughout opening hours. These include door handles, light switches, cash tills and windows.

Maintain rigorous cleaning procedures, reviewing and adapting where necessary including high-risk spaces such as main thoroughfares, touch points and walls and floors in circulation routes (corridors, lifts, foyers, landings, stairs and lobbies).

Pay special attention to changing rooms including showers, sinks and other water systems. This is not only to help stop the spread of virus but also minimise the risk of legionella and other diseases. Lockers should either be kept free of personal items or products provided to wash these down after use.

Carry out a frequent, deep sanitisation clean of all areas to eliminate viruses and bacteria from all surfaces.
Vitality Health & Fitness
One gym group who has taken their approach to sanitisation up to the next level is Vitality Health & Fitness which has two gyms, one in Neath and the other in Port Talbot.
When the gyms re-opened in Summer 2020, the team followed all of the above guidelines as well as taking all members’ and visitors’ temperatures on arrival and providing towels for individuals to clean down equipment during their training sessions.
